The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA), in collaboration with the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), successfully hosted a two-day intensive workshop on OpenBiblio, a widely used open-source library automation software, on August 22 and 23, 2025. This initiative marked a significant step toward modernizing library operations across the country and strengthening the technical capacity of library professionals.
Organized with Purpose
The workshop was spearheaded by the Special Library Group (SLG) of SLLA for the 2025/2026 term. It was meticulously planned and executed under the leadership of SLG Convener Ms. Manoha Prasadi Wickramathilaka. The training sessions were conducted by Mr. Fahri Anas, Chief Librarian of the Naleemiah Institute of Islamic Studies, Beruwala. With his extensive academic and professional credentials (B.A.(Pera.), PGLIS (NIIS), MIM (NIIS), Chartered Librarian (SLLA)), Mr. Fahri Anas brought both depth and clarity to the sessions, ensuring participants gained hands-on experience with the software.
Although the workshop was originally designed for 20 participants, the overwhelming interest led to a total of 22 attendees. These included a diverse mix of professionals: school librarians, special library staff, public librarians, university students pursuing library science, and librarians from both private and government institutions.
Inaugural Ceremony Highlights
The workshop commenced with a formal inauguration, graced by SLLA President Mr. Sugath Gunathilaka. In his opening remarks, he underscored the importance of continuous professional development and the need for libraries to embrace digital transformation to meet evolving user expectations.

Workshop Modules and Learning Outcomes
The workshop was structured to provide practical, hands-on training. Key modules included:
- Overview and introduction to OpenBiblio (OBIB)
- Customizing library settings to suit institutional needs
- Cataloging and circulation workflows
- Understanding and applying MARC 21 formats
- Techniques for converting Excel worksheets into MARC format
- Database management and troubleshooting
Participants actively engaged in real-time exercises, allowing them to simulate library operations and gain confidence in using OBIB for their day-to-day tasks.
Certification and Closing Ceremony

The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, recognizing the commitment and participation of all attendees. The event was attended by:
