SLLA NON-CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP

Non-Corporate Membership is an entry-level professional membership category of the Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA), established in accordance with the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) Law No. 20 of 1974, as amended by Act No. 7 of 2004, and the Rules and Regulations of the Association. It is intended as a pathway to Corporate Membership.

Eligibility
A person shall be eligible to apply for Non-Corporate Membership if he or she has:

   1. successfully completed the three-year professional course conducted by the Sri Lanka                                 Library Association; or
   2. obtained an equivalent or higher qualification in Library and Information Science from a recognized            university or other institution approved by the Council.

The determination of the equivalency of qualifications shall rest exclusively with the Council of the Sri Lanka Library
Association.

Admission Procedure
Applications shall be submitted to the General Secretary in the prescribed form together with certified copies of qualifications and all supporting documents required by the Association.

The General Secretary shall examine each application and submit it, together with her recommendations, to the Executive Council for consideration. Applications recommended by the Executive Council shall be submitted to the Council for final approval. No applicant shall be admitted to membership unless and until such approval is granted by the Council.

Membership Fees
Upon approval, the applicant shall pay the prescribed Annual Non-Corporate Membership Fee together with the prescribed Administrative and Processing Fee, which shall be payable only once upon admission. The Annual Membership Fee shall thereafter be payable in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Association.

 
 
 

Rights, Privileges and Restrictions
Non-Corporate Membership shall not confer the rights, privileges, status or professional recognition accorded to Corporate Members. Accordingly, a Non-Corporate Member:

1. shall not be entitled to attend or participate in the Annual General Meeting or exercise any voting rights;
2. shall not be eligible to contest for or hold office in the Council, Executive Council, or as a Convener or Chairperson of any Committee
3. may be appointed only as an ordinary member of a Committee, subject to the approval of the Council;
4. shall not be entitled to wear or be issued any ceremonial cloak of the Association;
5. shall not be entitled to use the designation “Chartered Librarian” or any title, designation or post-nominal letters reserved for Corporate Members; and
6. shall not be entitled to any rights, privileges, benefits or services expressly reserved for Corporate Members under the Incorporation Law, the Rules and Regulations, or any policy of the Association.

Progression to Corporate Membership
A Non-Corporate Member who subsequently satisfies the qualifications, experience and other requirements prescribed under the Incorporation Law, the Rules and Regulations, and the policies of the Association may apply for admission to Corporate Membership through the prescribed procedure.

Interpretation
This Policy shall be read together with the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) Law No. 20 of 1974, as amended by Act No. 7 of 2004, and the Rules and Regulations of the Association. In the event of any inconsistency, the provisions of the Incorporation Law and the Rules and Regulations shall prevail.
