Special Radio Discussion on Artificial Intelligence and Library & Information Management

 

The Special Libraries Section of the Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) successfully organized a special radio discussion on “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Library and Information Management” in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

The programme was held under the leadership of the Special Library Convener, Ms. Subhashini Abhayadasa, with the active support and participation of members of the Special Libraries Section. It was broadcast on 19 July 2026, from 7.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m., through the Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation on 91.7 MHz and 91.9 MHz.

The discussion featured two distinguished resource persons:

  • Professor Ruwan Gamage, Director, National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), University of Colombo.
  • Dr. Preethi Liyanage, Librarian/Registrar, CFPS Law School (Affiliated with the University of London) and Former President of the Sri Lanka Library Association.

The discussion explored the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of library and information management. Key topics included the practical applications of AI in library services, emerging opportunities, ethical and operational challenges, and the evolving role of information professionals in an AI-driven environment. The speakers also highlighted the importance of embracing technological innovation while maintaining the core values of librarianship and information management.

The programme provided valuable insights for librarians, information professionals, students, researchers, and the wider public, encouraging greater awareness of the opportunities and responsibilities associated with AI technologies in the information sector.

This successful initiative reflects the commitment of the Special Libraries Section of the Sri Lanka Library Association to promoting professional development and fostering informed discussions on emerging technologies that continue to shape the future of library and information services.
