SLLA Associateship (Chartered Membership)

According to the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 2004, the Membership consists of corporate members and non-corporate members. The Corporate members consist of Fellows and Associates who shall have voting rights; The non-corporate members (persons not eligible to be corporate members) shall have no voting right.

Criterion of the SLLA Associateship

Those who have completed the Diploma in LIS or an equivalent professional course or any higher academic course on LIS are eligible to apply for Non-Corporate membership. Non-corporate members with five years of full-time service in the field of library and information services, of which at least two years should be of supervised service after completing the LIS qualification eligible to apply for the Associateship of the Sri Lanka Library Association as a full-fledged professional and would be eligible to become a Chartered Librarian.

SLLA Membership

According to the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 2004, the Membership consists of corporate members and non-corporate members. The Corporate members consist of Fellows and Associates who shall have voting rights; The non-corporate members (persons not eligible to be corporate members) shall have no voting right.

Non-corporate Membership is the first step in getting involved with SLLA activities.

Non-corporate members with five years of full-time service in the field of library and information services, of which at least two years should be of supervised service after completing the LIS qualification, are eligible to apply for the Associate Membership.

Senior Associate members of SLLA (continuous membership of SLLA for more than 5 years after receiving the Associateship) who have made a significant contribution to the Library and Information profession of Sri Lanka are eligible to apply for Fellowship of the SLLA.

Senior members who have been associated with the SLLA for a long period are eligible to apply for Life Membership.

With effective from the 10th of November 2023, the council has decided to revisise the SLLA membership fee as follows;

  • Non-Corporate Membership Subscription: Rs. 2000
  • Associateship Subscription: Rs. 2500
  • Fellowship Subscription: Rs. 4000

Fellowship 

According to the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) (Amendment) Act No. 7 of 2004, the Membership consists of corporate members and non-corporate members. The Corporate members consist of Fellows and Associates who shall have voting rights ; The non-corporate members (persons not eligible to be corporate members) shall have no voting right.

Criterion for the Fellowship of SLLA 

Senior Associate members* of the Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) who have made a significant contribution** to the Library and Information profession of Sri Lanka are eligible to apply for Fellowship of the SLLA (FSLLA).

*Senior Associate member is defined as an Associate Member of the SLLA who has continuous membership of the SLLA for more than 5 years after receiving the Associateship from the SLLA.

**Significant contribution is measured by taking into account the member’s contribution to the LIS profession of Sri Lanka in the following 4 areas;

A. Library and Information Science (LIS) publications (print or electronic)
B. Service rendered as a Key Officer/committee member of the SLLA
C. Contribution to human resources development in LIS
D. Research and innovations in LIS

Applicant must earn a total of 30 marks in fields A, B, C, and D to be considered for the fellowship criteria. They must earn a minimum of 20 marks, with 10 marks each for fields B and C, and either 10 marks for field A or 10 marks for field D. Additionally, they should earn a minimum of 30 marks to be eligible for the fellowship award.

Associate members who have maintained continuous active membership in the SLLA for 5 or more years and have obtained a total of 30 marks, with 10 marks for field B, 10 marks for field C, and 10 marks for either field A or field D, will be eligible to apply for the fellowship.

The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA), incorporated by the Act of Parliament “ The Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) Law No. 20 of 1974 as amended by the Sri Lanka Library Association (Incorporation) (Amendment) Act No. 7 of  2004” is the sole body assigned with the responsibility of safeguarding the

Profession of Library & Information Science in Sri Lanka, interests of its members and the General Public.

The following is a list of Corporate Members of SLLA who are entitled to take and use the title “Chartered Librarian” Fellow Members shall be entitled to use abbreviation FLA (Sri Lanka) and Associate Members ALA (Sri Lanka) after their name.

Any person who contravenes the above provision shall be guilty of an offence under the said Law and the Amendment thereof.

SLLA Life Membership

The Corporate members consist of Fellows and Associates who shall have voting rights ; The non corporate members (persons not eligible to be corporate members) shall have no voting right.

Criterion of the SLLA Life Membership (updated on 01.10.2014) 

Category 1: SLLA Senior members who had been active participants   of the   Association prior to the SLLA Act No. 20   of 1974 was   enacted, irrespective of their qualifications and the membership category will be eligible for Life Membership without a Membership Fee.

Category 2:   SLLA Senior Members with 20 years of continuous membership after obtaining the SLLA Associateship will be eligible for Life Membership without a Membership Fee.

Category 3:   SLLA members having 10 years of continuous Corporate Membership could apply for Life   Membership. Those who failed to pay the membership for the final two year period of the required period, will be given the opportunity to pay the arrears. Membership Fee: Rs. 10,000.00. (This could be paid in two equal installments within six months. But Life Membership will be granted only after the completion of the payment).
